Scriptural Themes of Genesis to Deuteronomy

by Bobby Bruno
5/16/2014 / Bible Studies

The overall theme of Genesis thru Deuteronomy is the sovereignty of God. God created man, man fell, but God was determined to claim His people back to Himself. Through His covenant with Abraham and the rules for holiness, God promised to give His people a land all their own, all they simply had to do was to listen and obey everything that God taught them.

God first promised Abraham that he would not only have a son but would be the father of many nations. All throughout these five books we see this story come to its fruition when God's people finally entered the land promised to them. It took a lot of fits and starts on the part of the people, but they did finally have a land of their own to live and grow. The theme of God's faithfulness was very evident throughout this story as He did what He promised He would do. No matter what His people chose to do (the Golden Calf, for instance), God still kept His promise to increase the size of the nation and to watch over them forever.

The holiness of God came in the form of sacrifices for sin and in the Law He gave to Moses to give to the people. God demanded obedience from his people at all times, but, knowing that they could never keep the Law perfectly, set up the system of sacrifices to forgive the people of their sins and to cleanse them from the stain their sins cause in their souls.

The sovereignty of God was also shown by God being a jealous God who would have no other gods before Him. Idol worship was not tolerated. Knowing that His people would turn away from Him from time to time, God set up a system of blessings and curses if His Law was not followed. The theme of obedience to this Law runs throughout the five books of the Pentateuch. All in all, God wanted His people to love Him for His care upon them and to see that they could do nothing without Him. This theme may not be as evident as the others, but it is there in the fact that God did set up the systems of the Law, sacrifices, blessings, and curses. Not
to take away their freedom, but to give them the freedom to love, honor and obey the God who gave them life and who would keep them safe from harm and sin if they did.
