Hosea 14:2
Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.
a. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings (Hosea 14:3: Take words with you and return to HASHEM; say unto Him, "May You forgive all iniquity and accept good [intentions], and let our lips substitute for bulls.
b. Septuagint: Take with you words, and turn to the Lord your God: speak to him, that ye may not receive the reward of unrighteousness, but that ye may receive good things: and we will render in return the fruit of our lips.
c. NLT: Bring your confessions, and return to the LORD. Say to him, "Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us, so that we may offer you our praises.
d. Amplified Bible: Take with you words and return to the Lord. Say to Him, Take away all our iniquity; accept what is good and receive us graciously; so will we render [our thanks] as bullocks [to be sacrificed] and pay the confession of our lips.
1. "Take with you words, and turn to the LORD"
a. God has chosen the medium of speaking words as the means of us communicating to Him for salvation and of speaking faith. We repent with our words, cry out for mercy and salvation with our words. We speak out the faith in our heart with words.
1). Romans 10:6-9 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
2). Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
3). Mark 11:22-24And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
4). 2 Corinthians 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.
a). If we are believing God for a promise in His word, for an part of the inheritance that Christ Jesus died and rose from the dead for us to have, we must speak from our heart in faith and utter the same thing His word promises.
b. We can worship God with our words. Hallelujah! What a wonderful blessing that anytime we want we can worship the Most High God and tell Him of our love. Jesus is the High Priest of our profession, our confession, the words of our heart and mouth. Of the many things we can give him to offer to the Father for us, the words of our mouth are one of them.
1). Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.
2). The note under Hosea 14:3 in the Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: An essential part of repentance is that one feel remorse for his past failings and sincerely resolve to improve. Thus the penitent begins by begging God to look favorably upon the good intentions and to accept the prayers, confession, and pledges of his lips in place of, and as more worthy than, fatted bulls as offerings, which may look superficially impressive but are lacking in inner content.
2. "so will we render the calves of our lips."
a. calves [6499 * par][Gesenius: young bull, steer, bullock.]
b. It is a very wonderful and fulfilling truth of Scripture that we can offer sacrifices to God through mouths, a truth just as fulfilling for us under the New Covenant.
1). Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
2).The Lord does not just want our mouth. In the Old Covenant as under the New Covenant He wants to possess all of us.
a). Matthew 15:7, 8 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
c. The Lord wants all of us, spirit, soul, and body, all of our bodily members, and we can and should worship Him through and with all of them. It was a prominent truth under the Old Covenant and it has of course passed into the New Covenant.
1). Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
d. The Apostle Paul's exhortation for us to pray is based on the inspired Old Covenant concept of prayer.
1). Psalm 141:2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
2). 1 Timothy 2:8 I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
