2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
1. "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season"
a. instant [2186 * ephistemi] [Zodhiates: to place oneself upon or near, to stand upon, by, near.]
b. in season [2122 * eukairos] [Zodhiates: opportunely, convienently, in season.]
c. out of season [171 * akairos; a-negative; kairos-season] [Zodhiates: inopportunely, unseasonably.]
1). 1 Peter 3:15 "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear."
2). We are to always be ready to give the word, when it's the opportune time and when its not the opportune time.
2. "reprove, rebuke, exhort"
a. reprove [1651 * elegcho] [Zodhiates: In th NT, to convict, to prove one in the wrong and thus to shame himto convince of errorto reprove by chastisement, correct.
1). Examples: John 16:8, "he will reprove the world of sin"; 1 Timothy 5:20, "them that sin rebuke before all;" Titus 1:13, "rebuke them sharply"; Titus 2:15, "rebuke with all authority"; Revelation 3:19, "As many as I love, I rebuke".
2). There is an interesting passage in Jeremiah that indicates people can get in bondage to the point they refuse to be ashamed.
a). Jeremiah 3:3 "Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusest to be ashamed."
b). I have a saying from this that goes, "I'd rather have a hoary head, than a whores forehead." [Proverbs 16:31; Jeremiah 3:3]
b. rebuke [epitimao * 2008] [Zodhiates: In the N.T. to punish, rebuke, charge. By implication, to admonish strongly, with urgency, authority. One may rebuke another without bringing that one to a conviction of any fault, perhaps because there may have not been any fault or because there was fault but the rebuke was insufficient and ineffectual to bring the offender to acknowledge it. Therefore, epitimao is merely the rebuke without any result in the person who is being rebuked.]
c. exhort [parakaleo * 3870] [Zodhiates: to aid, help, comfort, encourage.]
3. "with all longsuffering and doctrine."
a. longsuffering [3115 * makrothumia] [Zodhiates: Forbearance, longsuffering, self-restraint before proceeding to action. The quality of a person who is able to avenge himself yet refrains from doing so.]
b. doctrine [1322 * didache] [Zodhiates: In an active sense it means the act of teaching, instruction, tutoring.]
