Like a Flood: The Overflow of the Spirit of God
by Rochelle Arnold
9/11/2013 / Bible Studies
I have heard it taught that Isaiah 59:19 is misinterpreted because of the misplacement of a simple comma in the King James Version of the Bible. Here is how you will find the scripture written in that version, "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up or raise up a standard." This should actually read, "When the enemy shall come in, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up or raise up a standard." If you look at the different versions of this scripture in the Bible, you will see what I mean.
So, What does this scripture mean? I believe it means that the Lord is pouring out a flood of His Spirit in these last days to overcome the world by surprise. The enemy has obviously come in, but the Lord is getting ready to lift up the standard like a flood. The standard is the way of excellence now in the world. Things such as music, theater, television, books, education, family life and our overall culture will be overcome with the power of the Holy Spirit operating through blood bought believers like us. The Lord is pouring out His Spirit on believers so they can impact the culture for Christ in a fresh, new way. This will lift up the standard and overcome the enemy when he comes in.
Isaiah 43:18 says, "Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; or rush forth; Will you not be aware of it?" The scripture goes on to say that the Lord will make a roadway in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to His chosen people, the people whom He formed for Himself will declare His praise.
This outpouring will occur in dry places or places you would least likely expect. Isaiah 44: 3 reads, "For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and they will spring up among the grass like poplars by streams of water."
Young people will teach and minister with fire and passion. Older ones will teach younger ones. There will be an outpouring of love across this land. Many will be touched and saved for the kingdom of God. Justice and righteousness will be like an ever-flowing stream. (Amos 5:24) This flood also brings about judgment by uncovering all hidden things.
"So they will fear the name of the Lord from the west and His glory from the rising of the sun, for He will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives." (Isaiah 59:19 New American Standard Version) Again we read in Isaiah 43, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you."
I believe the waters the Lord is referring to here are the waters of judgment. We will all have to pass through them, but the redeemed will not be overcome or drowned. The fire is referring to the trials and afflictions we go through in this world.
2 Corinthians 4, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."
As the Spirit of the Lord begins to raise the standard over the enemy like a flood, we will see multitudes coming into the kingdom of God. The church will break free from its four walls and will become a church with no walls. The Lord taught us that the kingdom of God is within us.
The Coming of the Kingdom of God
Luke 17 22, Then he said to his disciples, "The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Men will tell you, 'There he is!' or 'Here he is!' Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark." Then the flood came and destroyed them all.
The flood of the Lord also comes from our innermost being. The Word says for he or she who believes in Jesus, as the scripture said out of their spirit man or (innermost being) shall flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38-39) Like a flood, the spirit of the Lord will pour out over the earth. He prepares a table for us in the midst of our enemies and anoints our heads with oil. Our cup shall overflow and the favor of the Lord will follow us wherever we go. We will dwell in the house of the Lord (or His presence) forever. (Psalm 23)
