Psalm 110:7

by Don Costello
7/18/2013 / Bible Studies

Psalm 110:7

He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

a. Translations.

1). [New living Translation] But he himself will be refreshed from brooks along the way. He will be victorious.

2). [RSV] He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

1. "He shall drink of the brook in the way"

a. drink [8354 * shathah][Strong: to imbibe (literally or figuratively):--X assuredly, banquet, X certainly, drink(-er, -ing), drunk (X -ard), surely.]

b. brook [5158 * nachal][Strong: in its original sense; a stream, especially a winter torrent; (by implication) a (narrow) valley (in which a brook runs); also a shaft (of a mine):--brook, flood, river, stream, valley.]

c. A Jewish tradition teaches that this brook is a result of the blood from the many bodies, and that the phrase of drinking from it is a metaphor for victory.

2. "therefore shall he lift up the head."

a. The phrase "lift up the head" refers in this case to being exalted and after the metasphor of drinking in the victory, exaltation is the next step.

1). Psalm 3:3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

2). Psalm 27:6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
