Noses and Opinions

by Ramona Cook
6/06/2013 / Bible Studies

Sometimes teachers and parents find innovative ways to indelibly communicate a lesson they need to impress on their students; my father was not a certified teacher but he certainly understood those methods, and to this day I marvel at his ingenuity.

This is a true story and this part of my article is altogether about "noses."

My new sister, my first sister, was now 14 days old. It was the first day that my mother was allowed to get out of bed post delivery, and it was the first day family and friends were allowed to visit. Those were the rules of the medical community in those days when babies were delivered at home.

I had two brothers and I was so excited about my new sister. However, by the "rules" of the day none of the older children were allowed to touch the baby, Daddy would allow us to stand about 6 feet away and look at her but touching was not permitted.

I sneaked into the bedroom through a door from another bedroom. All the adults were in the living room visiting, so no one would know. Touching the baby was so exciting that I decided to change her diaper also, just like I had seen others do.

I unwrapped her blanket and moved her position on the bed, unpinned her diaper, and pinned it back. I was careful to leave her "exactly" as I had found her; or so I thought.

Later that evening Daddy called all three of us to stand before him. I was 7 years old and my brothers were 5 and 3 years old. Daddy asked us who had moved the baby; none of us had done it. After quizzing us several more times he told us that he was going to have to do the Ink Spot Test.

Daddy said that he had read about The Ink Spot Test in the news paper and that some lady in another State had found it necessary to discover who was not telling the truth among her children. She had put a little spot of ink on their noses and, he said, that there is a chemical action that takes place during the night while you sleep, and that the chemical process only happens to the one who is not telling the truth. He said that the chemical reaction eats your nose completely off.

Daddy emphasized that the effects of having no nose was really serious. He said that not only would everybody stare at you for the rest of your life but also if you ever had to wear glasses there would be nothing to hang your glasses on and they'd keep falling off your face. It was even a problem about going out of the house on sunny days because you'd have to carry an umbrella everywhere you went, just in the event that a sudden rain came up. With no nose, he told us, you don't have a water shed and you could possibly drown... then he put the ink spot on our noses.

I had to ponder this situation, so I took my secret thinking position behind the sofa. I thought a long time and decided to "fess up before going to bed." I took my spanking for lying, but that happened the next day; we were never spanked at bed time.

This article is birthed by my often voiced quote as a Bible teacher, "Opinions are like noses, we all have one."

It occurs to me that it is equally important to have "opinions" as it is to have "noses."

Without opinions we lack a direction by which to focus our life. Of course we do all have opinions. However, they are not always the opinions that are accurate or based in truth.

Sometimes our heart felt opinions are not those that compel us to beneficial activities. So we do indeed need to celebrate the nose on our face, it is vital; but we also need to introspect our "opinions" for accuracy and dependability. Truth based Opinions are vital to us.

As a student of life, or of The Bible in particular, we must find the truth. None of us wishes to place our confidence on a faulty or vacillating surface. Therefore, it becomes necessary to seek Truth and Wisdom and Knowledge.

The Truth is always in existence, but we do not always have a hold on Truth. When Truth is firmly grasped by us there is no way it can be taken from us, and we then make life decisions based on that which enriches our life and makes it a successful journey, and pleasing in the sight of God.

Our Opinions may vary and neither of us be correct. But whatever is Truth will become the same for us.

We may truly each one be on the same Path to Heaven, but be at different junctures on that path. Our life experiences instruct each of as we walk the road of life; it is in hearing each other, with proper respect for each other, that we all learn how to find the Truth of The Scriptures together.

Develop Opinions. They are necessary and everyone does have them; but, our concern must be, "Are my opinions based on Truth?" Therefore, in Bible Study Classes it is imperative that all opinions be backed up with Scripture references, and then be discussed with an attitude of prayerful respect.
