Reproof

by Dewayne Rachels
1/21/2013 / Bible Studies

The definition of "reproof", according to Merriam-Webster, is criticism for a fault. I don't know anyone who likes being told when they are wrong, this includes me. I absolutely abhor being told about my faults, especially when I am living in the moment and pumped up about an idea. My first response is always frustration, followed by denial and pride. However, Proverbs tells us that reproof gives wisdom (Proverbs 29:15). I would like to consider myself wise; wouldn't we all want to consider ourselves wise? The problem is to be considered wise we have to hold ourselves to God's standards, which are provided for us in the Bible. We truly have to examine ourselves and be as critical of ourselves as we would our worst enemy. Mainly because WE are our worst enemy. We tend to compare our behaviors and mannerisms to other men, however, this concept is entirely wrong. In order to become more like Christ and a wiser person we must compare our behaviors and mannerisms with Jesus, and if this doesn't humble you... be worried!

The reason I began this blog about reproof was because a good friend and spiritual brother told me I was wrong for posting my last blog. My last blog was written about atheism. Doug quickly rebuked me for my posting and reminded me of our mission statement which states that we are spreading the Gospel through the love of Jesus. How are we expected to reach atheist if we tell them exactly the same things the world is telling them, "believe or go to hell!!" I didn't come right out and same this in my blog but I might as well had. The love of Jesus was not in my address on the attack of Christian prayers within the Hamilton County Commission by the "Freedom From Religion Foundation". I think God for Doug's courage to reproof me on this subject. As the Contemporary Christian Song, "Jesus, Friend of Sinners" states, "The world is on their way to you but they're tripping over me. Always looking around and never looking up, I'm so double minded! A plank-eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided..." I never like hearing I'm wrong but after my flesh is calmed down, normally through prayer, I am able to graciously accept the reproof and thank God for people in my life who will tell me when I'm wrong, because this is how a foolish man becomes wiser.

Proverbs 17:10 (KJV) says, "Reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool."
