Desiree's Thanksgiving
by delilah washington
7/30/2012 / Short Stories
Finally! Desiree jingled the keys that represented a new lease, not just on life, but her new apartment. How ironic she moved back to the neighborhood that she convinced her soon to be ex-husband to move from because they needed more space for their now 1 year old son. She laughed to herself as she thought of the frown that crept on his face when she told him where she was moving. Well, of course, he would frown. He is now living in the bigger space, but its noise ridden with teenagers, gangbangers, constant fights and unfortunately, occasional gun fire. And here she is back by the lake, the beach, to some peace of mind.
She deserves it! Five years of marriage and he has put her through humiliating hell! Public cheating; deliberate lying; mean and hurtful words; non-existing sex, well for her, at least; emotional abuse, oh no.that would involve some emotions to start. To which there was none. Desiree sighed as she leaned her head back against the car seat. She thought of her last night at the big apartment, the night that led her to where she is today.
She received a call from a friend to let her know that China was at her house with her husband. She thought her and China were building a good friendship. Joke on her! It seemed China's growing desire for her husband outweighed all else. Desiree's intuition wouldn't stop bothering her from the 1st time she decided to go over the phone bill that her and her husband shared. Since he spent more time on that damn phone than talking to her, she began to wonder who was holding so much of his attention.
Wait, why was China and him talking and texting so much? From the moment he left the house in the morning, until he went to bed. Her eyes welled in tears as she thought of his words when she asked him about it.
"Mind your damn business", he told her angrily.
That's how her husband, the man she shared a beautiful child with, spoke to her.
She also thought of when she brought up to China the fact she caught them both being a little too touchy, feely. China got immediately defensive at the thought of being accused of anything.too defensive. The alarms just wouldn't stop ringing in Desiree's cloaked mind!
Cloaked because the things she would witness she used ecstasy to help disillusion self, the things that were whispered she used tequila to drown out. Cloaked because constant partying, drugs, sex, and alcohol became the norm in their sorry world. A world not meant for marriage. But no matter what she tried and did to cloak the reality of her life, she couldn't ignore God's words beating her spirit and forcing her to pay attention to what was happening around her.
She yelled out to her friends, "China is over my house with John", ran to her car, jumped in and sped off towards revelations and truths and no more denials. Her adrenaline was pumping for final insight; the physical evidence to convict. Looking in her rear view mirror, she saw that one of her close friends, Faith, jumped in her car to follow her.
But God's plan was not for her to storm into the apartment with rage in her heart to wipe the floor with China. He only wanted her to get out of it. In her haste to get out the car, she dropped her house keys in the darkness and could not find them. This pissed her off because it eliminated the element of surprise and the blow to China's face she was day dreaming about giving on the ride to her home.
She rang the bell. A pause. She was then buzzed in. Her friend stayed parked outside. Desiree ran up only to find her husband and two friends in the apartment.
She smirked, "so where's China"?
He looked perplexed and asked with a look of confusion," China? Is everything ok"?
Desiree's phone rang. It was her friend. "China just came from out the back, got in her car and drove off".
Desiree disconnected the call calmly. Then slapped John. It didn't feel as good as she thought.
The other guests promptly left the uncomfortable scene. After some yelling and no resolutions, Desiree also attempted leaving. But John wasn't letting that happen.
But.
The next day, while John was at work, Desiree packed up what she could. How fitting that it was Thanksgiving Day? She happily ate the food John cooked the night previously, while China kept him company. She laughed, giddy with new purpose and then, with her son, left.
And she gives thanks to God each day for delivering her from that time in her life.
Desiree smiled as she jingled her keys again and looked down at her son.
"Ready to see your new home", she asked.
He grinned.
She entered the keys, unlocked the door, excitement for new life pumping her heart and tickling her spine. And stepped in.
~Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. ~ Matt 11:28-30
Born and raised on the South side of Chicago and mother of a beautiful son, Delilah has been writing since she was 10 years old. A quiet child, books took her out of herself and let her imagination run free. Deciding she wanted to create that same space for another person, she began writing stories on her own and let her friends and family enjoy them.
Life and the issues that come with being an adult took her away from her craft for years. Now 37, engaged to a wonderful man and a woman of God, peace has found herand that life gave her new stories to share. Stories of this world and the struggles many people encounter. Delilah decided to use her gift from God to tell the world of His goodness and mercy and how with Him, we can be saved from these troubles.
Stories of heartache, tears, pain, trials, hope, inspiration, peace and happiness..and a laugh or two.
