Abandoned and Found

Maybe she wasn't the kind of mother she should have been. Maybe one of more of her children felt left out at times. She did have a favorite, as many mothers do. One of her four children seemed to love her more than the rest, and had a special way about him.
She sits in a chair by her bed. There are two others in the room with her, old and wrinkled, and sitting in their chairs as well. Just sitting and staring. She hums a tune to herself. Got to do something to drown out the voices in her head, something to keep words from the past from haunting her.
Her marriage had been full of violence and pain. In those days you didn't think about leaving. Where would you go? She didn't work and didn't have any skills, so she stayed and did her best to raise her children. It was hard, because of the depression that came with being an abused woman. Finally, she got the courage to leave, but had to work as a waitress and a launderer at the same time. Her children had to raise themselves. She supposed they never forgave her for not being there for them.
She rarely has visitors. They stopped coming when she begged them to take her home with them and promised she'd be good, if only they would take her out of this cold, stark, room. Even her favorite one had stopped coming to see her. So she sits, and no matter how hard she hums, thoughts from her childhood and beyond creep into her muddled mind, and her heart is broken.
She used to watch television, but her mind no longer allows her to follow the words and pictures. The same went for reading, too much activity going on at once in her brain. She wishes the confusion would go away.
She does have one visitor. He comes in the evenings. He is a paralyzed ex fireman. He comes everyday and talks to her about saving her soul. She has always believed there was a man named Jesus, but couldn't believe He was who He said He was. A Savior? Her intelligent mind just can't believe a fairy tale like that. Sure there is a God that spins things in orbit, but a man who claimed to be the Son of God?
More and more now, she begins to think she is wrong. She looks forward to her fireman friend coming. She gets a little closer to thinking he might be right. She sees how content he is, paralyzed, in a wheelchair, and happier than anyone she has ever met.
That evening the pain starts in her chest. Her friend shows up right on time, and reads the Bible to her. He prays with her, and asks her if she is ready to accept her salvation yet. He had asked her that everyday since he began coming.
This time she surprises him with her answer. "Yes, I believe so. I can feel a presence within me now, and I believe it is Jesus Christ." She then lets go and gives her life and will to Jesus. Her mind clears up, and she feels a happiness she has never felt before. Her friend leaves, and she begins humming a beautiful hymn she learned in church as a child.
She had seen the Angel in the doorway earlier that evening, just waiting for her. She knew she was finally going to leave this place and go on to the next one. Someone was finally going to take her home. The Angel told her not to fear, He would take care of her no matter how bad she acted. She knew at once the words had come from her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
They found her at ten thirty that night when they went in to check on her. She had the most beautiful look on her face and she was smiling. There was a light shining on her body through the window. Her earthly life had left her, and she was at peace.
