Placing A Demand

by Onyekachukwu Ukeje
6/13/2012 / Testimonies

One day in church a sister stood out to testify. She started talking about the situations that God had allowed her to go through and still delivered her despite the close calls of harm. She gave a specific testimony of robbers coming into her hostel room and when they were done started dragging her down the stairs along with them to God knows where. She said she did not know what to do at the time. To her she was too small and weak for them to attempt fighting herself off. But she said all of a sudden she started to tell them to leave her in Jesus' name. She went, "leave me in Jesus' nameyou are leaving me in Jesus' name" And then one of them said to the other, "Leave her alone." And that was how God saved her.

She was baffled at how that worked. It was a new experience for her. She really could not explain it. But while she spoke I knew what exactly happened and how God saved her and so I indicated to speak, not knowing whether it was a testimony or a word of exhortation I was going give. I knew I was to say something for someone's benefit that morning.

When I got up I told a story someone told me while in a bus coming down from Port Harcourt in Nigeria. He was a Youth Corps member serving in the northern part of the country. During the 2011 elections when violence broke out in area he served he was among a group of Youth Corps members, and maybe others, attacked and of which six people died.

He said when violence broke out a group of raging youth came to their lodge where they were to attack them but they ran, as many as could, to a police station where the policemen on duty locked them inside the building to protect them. When the angry youth got to the police station and tried to get into the building they could not. So they left to buy petrol to burn down the station. While all this was going on there was a Youth Corps member who became so afraid that he did not think he was going to make it out of there alive. He called his mother from his mobile phone briefing her on the situation and telling her call their pastor and ask him to pray for him. He kept telling his mother that he did not think he was going to make it. At some point he conclusively said he was not going to make it.

While he was calling his mother and making the confessions that he would not make it his mates, both male and female, kept shutting him up and telling him to confess positively that he will survive. They even went to the extent of his ego to try to get him to speak positively or at least shut up. They told him that even the ladies were believing they would make it out alive and he a man was already chickening out, that he should be brave and get ready to act even if the angry mob succeeded in breaking in. Nevertheless he would not listen.

The angry mob came back, burnt down the building and attacked them but many, according the young man telling the story, escaped, both guys and girls. But the young man who believed he would not make it out alive was among the six who were killed.

Sad story it is. But the point is in Christ if you do not demand it you will not have it. I read John 16:26 to the church. "In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf." - (NIV). That was Jesus speaking. To ask means to demand, to place a demand. I told the sister that what she was doing when she was being dragged along was making a demand [of heaven] in the name of Jesus. And now I add another scripture, "In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." John 16:23-24(NIV).
