Judas: The Infamous One By:Meg Rosen

One of the most infamous characters in the Bible is the well known but not well loved disciple Judas Iscariot. He is known throughout Christianity as the disciple who turned Jesus into the Romans to be painfully killed on the cross. Also he is known for being the right hand man and so called best friend of Jesus. In my paper I am going to show you the real other side of Judas. I am going to go into the behind the scenes information about Judas's life during his discipleship and the superstitious legacy he left behind, along with important facts about Judas himself.
Judas Iscariot was the son of a man named Simon. As www.goodnewsaboutgod.com says, since there are many instances in the Bible where the name Simon comes up nobody actually knows which Simon is Judas's father . As the Bible says, all of the disciples originated in Galilee, all except for the apostle Judas Iscariot. As atheism.about.com states, the name Iscariot essentially means or at least meant "man of Kerioth." This is a mysterious fact considering the fact that Judas is always the disciple that stands out from the rest of the group. For example Judas is always listed last in the group of disciple, also Judas is said to have not actually believed in Jesus as the Lord! Why did all of this happen? These are all some of the many mysteries that the Bible brings to all people and we will probably never find out .
Many people believe that Judas was the overall villain in the Bible and betrayer of Jesus. Judas plotted against Jesus for a long period of time before he put his plans into action. These plans were made in order for Judas to set Jesus up to be captured and murdered. One fateful night Judas and the Romans finally put their plans into action. In order for Jesus to stay unaware of the capturing about to occur, Judas simply gave Jesus a slight kiss showing the Romans the signal that Jesus was the one that they had been searching for and wanting to capture. After the signal had been received by the Roman soldiers, they sprung into action, they captured Jesus and murdered him on the cross. This lead to yet another one of Judas's differences from the rest of Jesus's disciples. All of the other disciples were nailed to crosses over time after Jesus except for Judas. Judas took his own life by hanging himself out of shear guilt for what he had done to his own dear friend Jesus Christ.
The legacy full of superstition and mystery that Judas Iscariot left behind him is left unknown to many people even today! For instance did you know that our Friday the thirteenth is actually based on Judas at the last supper. The reasoning behind this is that since Judas was always listed last in the Bible in any of the lists of the twelve disciples, at the last supper when they made the list they counted Jesus making Judas the thirteenth of them. That is the reason for the overall believed to be unlucky number thirteen. The reason for Friday was because the day that Judas betrayed Jesus was on a Friday, therefore making Friday 13th the most unlucky and superstitious day of the year. The number thirteen is still considered a very unlucky number to this day. Most hotels, motels, and cruise ships do not have a floor numbered thirteen; instead they simply just skip it. Another Judas superstition, according to www.dailymail.com, is that if you spill salt, you have to throw a pinch of it over your left shoulder. The reason for this is that spilling salt is associated with the lies that Judas told and the treachery he committed. By throwing the pinch of salt over the left shoulder blinds the devil waiting there. Also there is a scarcely known superstition that thirteen people should not sit at a table all at one time because of his count at the last supper passover dinner. These and many other superstitions came from the legacy of Judas Iscariot.
If there was a prize for the most villainous apostle described in the Bible Judas Iscariot would take the cake. He is most well known for his act in turning Jesus into the Roman soldiers to be crucified. In my essay I described his differences from the rest of the group of apostles, his infamous acts to betray Jesus, and his dark legacy he left behind. In conclusion, Judas has proved to be the overall villain of the apostles.
