Truth still matters in an age of relativity

In this postmodern age, many people believe that the best worldview is to let each person construct his or her own version of truth. The mantra of "What's true for me may not be what's true for you" is becoming the banner under which this 'new and improved' humanity operates. They wonder, if truth is whatever we want it to be, why we continue to debate and discuss the concept of God.

There is a popular idea circulating today that says, "Truth is irrelevant and, if we would simply be kind to one another, everything would be fine." One problem with this theory is that, apart from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, humans do not have the capacity to love each other as they should. Humanity's definition of love is a conditional love that falls apart as soon as expectations are not met. An even more serious problem with this 'truth is irrelevant' idea, is that people can be kind to one another and still wind up spending an eternity in misery separated from God. It would be dishonest to claim I love people if I never shared with them the One thing they really needed above all other thingshow to have a saving relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Some think that people should hold whatever beliefs they choose and let others believe whatever they want to believe. They think that no one should consider what they believe to be the exclusive truth, but to allow all beliefs to have the same legitimacy. They do not believe in the existence of absolute truth. They consider truth to be a pliable substance that they can mold to fit their situation or lifestyle.

However, the question of God's existence, and how He views truth, is one of the most important, if not the most important, questions that could be asked. Our eternal destiny hinges depends on it. We are not at liberty to think we create our own truth. Josh McDowell writes,

"Reality will not budge one inch to satisfy the whims of a self-serving society. Any apparent success in changing moral principles or core truth is a temporary illusion that will soon shatter into grief and chaos." (Josh McDowell and Thomas Williams, In Search of Certainty, Tyndale House Publishers, 2003. p. 22)

An eternal God, who created and sustains our universe would rightly be worthy of our worship, love, and obedience. To reject, and rebel against, such a God would have monumental negative consequences. Conversely, to love and worship such a God would have eternally positive consequences. It is the responsibility of every human to choose whether to accept, or reject, the revelation of the God. This God has made His existence undeniable through nature and His Word, the Bible.

"For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made." (Romans 1:19-20 ESV)

The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. (Psalm 119:160 ESV)

[God's] word is truth. (John 17:17ESV)
