Lady of the Eyes

Sensuous, ochre-skinned woman, burqa
tight against her eyebrows, a
gift from mama. Not the glance of
a young girl
from neon Paris, nor
scented gardens in Spain, she's from
the land of Afghanistan
arid without grass to soothe
hardened soles, where
dust storms welcome travelers,
memories of famine, refugees worn
thin through war. Now she
shops in marketplaces
Taliban oppression subdued
from collective victories,
women no longer sold for passion
a new freedom in schooling,
dress choices, young girls
allowed to grasp opportunities. Yet
there is an anxious hush, as
guns begin their barking again.
