Marital bliss ends for Adam and Eve
by Greg Miller
8/21/2011 / Family
Adam and Eve disobeyed the Sovereign Lord, who unceremoniously kicked them out of the Garden of Eden.
While in the Garden of Eden, the couple enjoyed a lifestyle about which most people only dream. "Taking care of Eden was no trouble at all," Adam recalled.
"You're right about that," said Eve. "But since we don't live in Paradise any more, everything seems much more difficult."
"I shouldn't have disobeyed God," Adam responded. "If I had been obedient, we wouldn't be in this mess. It's all my fault."
"No, it's my fault," Eve argued. "God told you about the rule first, but I was fully aware of it, too."
"You know, before we ate the forbidden fruit, we always got along very well," Adam observed. "Then after we ate the fruit and the Sovereign Lord made us leave Eden, we started constantly arguing."
"You're right about that, too," Eve replied. "You know, I hate it when we don't get along. Why can't we just agree to never disagree?"
"Wonderful," Adam said. "We can start right now."
At first, the couple's commitment not to argue went well. In order to achieve family harmony, sometimes Adam cooperated with Eve's suggestions, and at other times, Eve went along with Adam's way of looking at things.
With the passing of time, however, both Adam and Eve began displaying a tendency to stick with their own viewpoint on any given topic. Before long, neither was willing to compromise on anything.
There were no family counselors back in those days, so they couldn't just look in a telephone directory or access the Internet to find someone with whom they could discuss their issues. Adam, however, recalled the cool-of-the-day conversations with God while they still lived in Paradise.
One day, feeling a bit depressed about the couple's strained relationship, Adam decided to speak to the Sovereign Lord about the problem. "God, I know that you hear me and that you know the situation between Eve and me," Adam whispered. "I would certainly appreciate anything you can do to make things better."
"What do you want me to do?," asked the Lord.
"You can make her see things my way once in a while, can't you?," asked Adam.
"No, I'm not going to force her to agree with you," replied the Lord. "And by the way, she has already asked me to make you occasionally see things her way."
"So what are you going to do about this?," asked Adam.
"That's between you and Eve," replied the Lord. "But I suggest that the two of you find some common ground on which to base your relationship, or your marriage will get rockier and rockier."
"Please don't mention rocks," Adam said. "I'm getting enough rocks to suit me every day while I'm trying to grow my crops!"
