The Burden of a Prophetic Donkey

by Deborah Taylor
4/05/2011 / Prophecy

Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."

All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

" Tell the daughter of Zion,
' Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

" Hosanna to the Son of David!
' Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!'
Hosanna in the highest!"

And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, "Who is this?" So the multitudes said, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee."

The day arrived for Christ to make His entry into Jerusalem.

He didn't choose a camel or a horse or chariot or even a group of strong men to carry Him into Jerusalem but instead He summoned for a donkey saying nothing more than, "the LORD has need of thee!" This donkey must have been one special creature for it was specifically chosen for His triumphant entry. And so it is with the prophet.

The calling of the prophet comes while waiting for their assignment.

There's no fanfare, no glittering lights or photo shoots, just a simple summons to "come." The role of a prophet can be lonely as they wait for the call but the journey and the rejection that emanates from the decision to follow Him is well worth it.

The burden of a prophetic donkey operates in the same manner and calling of the donkey summoned on that day in Bethphage. The disciples didn't go out and find the donkey, Christ beckoned for her sending others to serve as witnesses for this "ass"ignment.

Yes, she must have been some special donkey. A prophetic one if you ask me.

Looking up the people saw His humility and choice of transportation and was moved! They laid their clothes and tree branches along the donkey's path to provide a nice walkway for Christ! The tree and clothes that the donkey trodden on could have very well been a part of the same tree they hung Him on as they stripped His clothes from Him.

And yet, the donkey having received her call graciously carried Him into Jerusalem holding her head high knowing that the cross she carried (Christ) would one day be the burden of all who chose to follow and speak forth His word.
