A bird chirped loud - said "See what's ours
on his side of the safety bars.
Come out quickly, grasp your freedom -
enjoy these twinkling stars."

"You know that I am also free
and everything can always see -
here in the comfort of my home"
I said so gleefully.

He chirped again there on the ground,
"Come experience a life profound."
So I chirped again decidedly,
"I like what I have found."

"Just try to understand my plea"
chirped he from in an apple tree.
"My owner will come after you"
I quipped triumphantly.

That pesky bird had quite an edge,
He landed on my window ledge!
So I turned back to my owner,
"I'm staying here, I pledge."

Sincerely she said, "I love you"
so I told her, "I love you too.
You offer ample bird seed and -
have a fantastic view."

So then I saw that bird take flight.
With me, it couldn't win a fight.
I knew that I understood him -
and thought that I was right.

That pesky bird had quite a tale,
but my demands would all prevail.
For she was all I'd ever need -
and much too big to fail.

I clung so tight to selfishness -
my entitlements were quite a 'plus'.
I didn't care for other's needs -
nor 'rights' of theirs discuss.

But one day I got so enraged.
Starvation was my final wage.
I had disguarded freedom and -
was trapped inside my cage.

I had my dignity, my pride -
until that day my owner died -
With water gone and not one seed -
locked in tight I was indeed.

Had chances to escape, a few -
but couldn't from the life I knew.
Last thing I saw, that pesky bird -
pulling up a worm or two.
