Christian Weight Loss: What is the Deal with Gluttony?

by Kimberly Floyd
4/08/2010 / Health

Satan's ultimate goal is to separate us from God by enticing us to sin. In some cases of obesity, the sin is gluttony. Notice the distinction: being overweight is not a sin, but gluttonous behavior is. Even slim people can suffer from gluttony - specifically those who binge on food but then regurgitate it.

Just as drunkenness is drinking alcohol to excess, gluttony is eating food to excess. The bible lumps drunkenness and gluttony together in Proverbs 23:21: "For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags."

Have you ever experienced sleepiness or "brain fog" after Thanksgiving dinner? Well, that is the drowsiness the bible is referring to. You were likely drunk from the food excess, which temporarily impairs your judgment.

Satan wants you to continue getting drunk from food and then he wants you to feel guilty, hide your behavior from others, and live in fear of being found out. The end result is shame, which may compel you to overeat more to dull feelings of condemnation.

Satan is the ultimate two-faced con - he will convince you to sin, then turn around and condemn you for it!

So how can you conquer gluttonous habits? The first step is to admit that you can't do this alone. The bible says that Satan was the most subtle creature (disguised as a serpent) in the garden of Eden. He has also been deceiving mankind for thousands of years. It's not a fair fight when you try to match him alone.

But as a believer, you have Christ on the inside of you. So when it's time to go to war with Satan, it's still not a fair fight. But this time the advantage is in your favor!

Here is the recipe for victory, found in Galatians 5:16: "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

You must allow God to strengthen you in spirit and renew your mind so that you can walk in the spirit. When you do that, you can be assured that you will conquer all addictive issues and achieve the level of health, joy, and peace that God wants you to have.
