My Walk

by Barbara Anne fechtig
9/05/2009 / Womens Interest

When I was a child, there were so very many dreams and plans that I wanted to do, yet I was not "Big Enough" to do them. Patience, Mom kept telling me You'll be big soon enough, then we would take a walk and see what was around us and thank God for what we could see.

When I was in high school, the dreams were still there, but with newfound freedom, there was not enough time in the day for everything. Slow down, Mom kept telling me, You'll be an adult soon enough. I would roll my eyes and take a walk, frustrated about how slowly my life was going and pray that God would speed things up.

When I was in my twenties, my dreams were now attainable, but life got in the way. Responsibilities took precedence, dreams went down a notch or two on my to do list. Fulfill your Dreams, Mom would tell me, the world is ready. I took walks, mentally running down my to-do list, ignoring dreams.

Late in my twenties, sorrows came and overtook my life along with my dreams. What I had dreamt about as a child no longer held my fancy, there were no dreams or wishes left. Prayer and Peace, Mom would tell me, Band-Aids and hugs couldn't cover this situation. I would then take a walk crying out at the silence and praying for healing.

In my early thirties, life changed again. Peace and healing came, dreams were slow and hesitant. Life roared in at full speed and my to-do list became overwhelming once again. Stresses new appeared and worries took over. Relax, Mom would tell me, breathe in and look around you. I took walks now, with new eyes, beginning to enjoy the view, and once again thanked God for what was around me.

I don't know where this walk is leading, middle to late thirties and on are an open book with infinite possibilities. I know Mom would say Write in it a story of God, compassion, love and laughter, family and friends. Dreams are always possible, but my life that I have is more precious now. I will continue to take my walks, and I will continue to thank the Lord for His Blessings. We'll see where it leads.

See Mom, I listened.
