Sunday Drives and Economics
by Nancy Quinn Ears flapping in the breeze and tongue hanging out, my childhood dog Mitsy would boldly lean out the car window as far as she dared as we drove down the graveled road on a Sunday afternoon. After church on Sunday and a pot roast dinner, we would stop by the Dairy Queen and enjoy ice cream treats as we took our "Sunday drives" through the countryside. While that is no longer an inexpensive family event now with gas prices, it was a simple and economical treasured family event when I was growing up! Practically beside herself, our Sunday car drives would get our little rat terrier pacing the backseat across our laps and we'd grip her white tummy in fear that she'd slip out the window in her enthusiasm. Quickly losing interest in my window, she'd skitter across my legs to my sister's side to stretch her neck out and drink in the smells and sights of the Iowa countryside making sure she didn't miss a single sight. My childhood pet's enthusiasm for life and joy in a simple Sunday drive reminds me to look for joy in simple things too. These economic times shouldn't concern us. The Lord loves us and cares for us with His infinite and boundless love and will give us the wisdom needed to provide for our families. My childhood memories recall the joys of simple things we did; bike rides, a Sunday drive, stringing popcorn to decorate our Christmas tree. And as I look back, it was those family times that make up my treasured memories. So don't be concerned that you have to cancel your child's karate lessons or music lessons for now, your love and time spent with your children will be the memories they will treasure years from now! Luke 12:7 "And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows." Psalm 9:9 "The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble." May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ.
