Voices from the Womb
by Katherine Kimbley How do we recognize God's voice? Is it possible that we have heard it before, without recognizing that it belonged to Him? I think so. I am currently pregnant with my third child and the rest of the family and I spend a lot of time talking to my belly. Though I know that our new baby knows not where the voices come from, or that they belong to a group of people that love him dearly, I know he hears them. I feel him react. These are the voices that will provide him comfort and calm his spirit in days and years to come, merely because of their familiarity. As his mother, and the source of the voice he will become most familiar with, I anticipate with excitement the day he hears my voice clearly for the first time, from outside the womb. If he is anything like the other two, that will be the day he recognizes its source, and it will cause him to fix his new little gaze directly on me. What a cherished moment! Would God not also feel that same sense of joy the day we are reborn? Does He anticipate with excitement the moment we emerge from the worldly womb of our old selves into the light of new life with Him? The day we are born again, do we not, for the first time, hear His voice more clearly than ever before? Surely we do! How He must cherish the moment we turn our newly opened eyes toward His face for the first time as if to say, "Oh, it's You. Yours is the voice I've been hearing. You are the comforter and the giver of new life. You are the One I've been waiting to meet. Surely, I belong in Your arms." From that day forth, as a loving mother's voice to her child, so is the voice of God to us. May we never be truly comforted by another. Katherine Kimbley is a writer by trade and a mother of three.
