Tame Your Taste
by Olawale Ogunsola "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit, the things of the spirit." Romans 8:5. To God be the glory Who had given us the Holy Bible because by it the Saints are aware of what is required to make it to eternal life. No wonder then that The Holy Bible remains the most attacked of all books by the host of hell. The above Scriptural verse points to the truth on what to put our minds on and what to avoid from occupying our minds. The things of the flesh end in death while things of the spirit tend to live eternal. Everyone has his taste in life. It has to be tamed. It must be brought under the control of the Spirit of God. If left unchecked, it may consume the owner of the taste. The words of wisest king of his time, King Solomon, has this to say about his taste, "Whatever my eyes desired I did not Do you know that this unrestricted taste led to the acquisition of one thousand women to his disadvantage and that of his child who became a king over the land of Israel? The strange women he desired and acquired turned his heart away from the Lord God of his father who made him king and captain over his people. He provoked God with his taste that was not tamed. Do you know that the same King Solomon realized later that with all his desired taste, "all is vanity"? He expressed this in verse sixteen of Ecclesiastes chapter two. Should you by your taste pursue vanity? I think it should not be so. I should not also allow my taste to make me chase vanity. Oh! What is good like the determination of Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles? What can this be? He resolved, Do you know that it is not a sin to have a right and lawful taste for something? After all, everyone has his rightful taste that does not break any law of God or man. However, it is destructive to be a stooge to your taste. It should not have any upper hand over you. Your taste should not become your boss in any form or way. You need to be the controller of all your tastes, whatever they are no matter their number. Tame them until you are in firm control of them all. Bring your taste into subjection until you become the Master. Any untamed taste can bring destruction to anyone. Any man who minds spiritual things will have a strong taste for the things of the spirit so that he will not be brought under the control of the carnal things that will end in death. Beloved, what do you have a strong taste for? Does it help you spiritually? Or does it exalt mundane things over you? Tame it, please, before it destroys you, whatever it is.
