by Segun Olumide *PRECONDITIONS FOR HEAVEN SERIES (Every Sunday)* *LECTURE 66: SEVEN REASONS WHY EVERY BELIEVER SHOULD PAY THEIR TITHES — PART 7a* Sunday, 23rd October, 2022 (Released Wednesday, 26th October, 2022) Ministering: Segun Olumide *7 REASONS WHY EVERY BELIEVER SHOULD PAY THEIR TITHES — PART 7a*
Some weeks ago, we considered the first reason out of the 7 reasons why every believer should pay their tithes. The following week, we looked at the second reason. Then, we dwelt on the third reason. Later on, we dealt with the fourth reason. After that, we looked at the first part of the fifth reason. Next, we continued with the second segment of the fifth reason. Later, we completed the fifth reason with its third segment. Subsequently, we looked at the sixth reason. Now, God willing, we want to deal with the seventh reason. That first reason mentioned was — *REASON 1: TITHES STARTED BEFORE THE LAW; WERE EFFECTIVE AND REINFORCED UNDER THE LAW; AND CONTINUES AFTER THE LAW – UNDER GRACE* The second reason was — *REASON 2: TITHES BELONG TO GOD.* The third reason was — *REASON 3: REFUSING TO PAY YOUR FULL TITHES & OFFERINGS TO YOUR LOCAL CHURCH MEANS YOU ARE A THIEF STEALING GOD'S MONEY/RESOURCES* The fourth reason was — The fifth reason was — *REASON 5: THERE ARE GENUINE WITNESSES ESTABLISHING THE TRUTH* The sixth reason was —*REASON 6: THERE ARE PIECES OF EVIDENCE FROM "HEAVEN AND HELL TESTIMONIES" THAT NON-PAYMENT OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS HAS ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES* Now, the seventh reason is: *REASON 7: IT'S A MEANS OF LAYING UP TREASURE IN HEAVEN FOR YOURSELF AGAINST THE TIME TO COME AS WELL AS A MEANS OF HELPING OTHERS AND YOURSELF* Generally, giving your tithes and offerings achieves three things for you, namely: *(A) LAYING UP TREASURE FOR YOURSELF IN HEAVEN* *(B) HELPING OTHERS ON EARTH* *(C) HELPING YOURSELF ON EARTH* Let's consider them one by one. *(A) LAYING UP TREASURE FOR YOURSELF IN HEAVEN* Giving our tithes and offerings is a means of laying up treasures for ourselves in heaven against the time to come. With such understanding from Scripture, I taught them in the Church that whenever we want to give our tithes and offerings, we should confess that we are using them to lay up treasures (for ourselves) in heaven (good foundation) against the time to come. Very importantly, there are different types of offerings: ranging from general offering to first fruit offering to kingdom project offering to welfare offering to specialized offering (seed of faith, or offering one is directed personally by the Lord to give for a purpose not mentioned above), and so on. As a matter of caution, all types of offerings must be free will for nobody should be forced or pressurized to give for any reason. 2 Corinthians 9:7 RSV 2 Corinthians 9:7 BBE 2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT 2 Corinthians 9:7 GodsWord 2 Corinthians 9:7 AMP This principle agrees with what God had told Moses several years before Paul came on the scene. God told Moses in: Exodus 25:2 AMPC Exodus 25:2 ESV Exodus 25:2 GodsWord Exodus 25:2 NIV Exodus 25:2 KJV Now, we are going to see from the Scripture how our giving on earth translates to eternal treasures in heaven. That reminds me of Jesus' statement below: Luke 16:9 GodsWord Luke 16:9 NLT Luke 16:9 NIV Certainly, our attitude towards financial and material possessions on earth affects us in eternity. Yes, financial and material possessions end on earth, but, their spiritual impact, right or wrong, is forever! 1 Timothy 6:7 KJV Now, let's see what Jesus and Paul taught on laying up treasure in heaven. *JESUS* *ARE YOU LAYING UP TREASURES FOR YOURSELF IN HEAVEN OR ON EARTH?* Matthew 6:19-21 KJV From this Scripture above, we can see or deduce the following: (i) You can lay up treasures for yourself either *on earth or in heaven* (ii) You can lay up treasures *on earth* for yourself or for others, especially your wife, children, siblings, friends, and so on. (iii) But, you can only lay up treasures *in heaven* for yourself while on earth; you can never lay up treasures *in heaven* for another person no matter how dear the person is to you! (iv) Jesus commanded that we must not lay up treasures for ourselves *on earth,* but *in heaven* (v) Laying up treasures for yourself *on earth* refers to heaping up resources greedily and selfishly for yourself to impress and/or oppress others (vi) Laying up treasures for yourself *in heaven* refers to giving out your resources to benefit others and doing good works (as led) (vii) Moth does not devour or eat up the treasures *in heaven* (viii) Rust does not corrupt the treasures *in heaven* (ix) Thieves neither break through nor steal the treasures *in heaven* (x) If your treasures are *in heaven,* your heart will be set *on heaven;* but if your treasures are *on earth,* then your heart will be set *on earth* Colossians 3:1-2 AMPC *HOW TO LAY UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN* Luke 12:32-34 KJV Luke 12:33 AMPC Selling your possessions and giving alms to the poor provide you unfailing and inexhaustible treasure in the heavens — never-growing-old purses and handbags in heaven — fat heavenly bank account. It's inaccessible by thieves and indestructible by moths. The expression: *"purses and handbags that do not grow old, an unfailing and inexhaustible treasure in the heavens"* reminds me of what Paul wrote or said in Philippians 4:15-19 NIV: *15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of GIVING AND RECEIVING, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. 17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your ACCOUNT.18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.* I want to believe that the word *"account"* in verse 17 above refers to heavenly profit (a heavenly bank account) or both heavenly and earthly profits. So, one of the ways to lay up treasures in heaven for ourselves is to give alms to the poor, which sometimes may require selling our possessions as the need may arise and as led by God for as many as are led by God's Spirit are God's sons (Romans 8:14). In the Scripture above, Jesus didn't tell His disciples to sell all their possessions, rather, He was asking them to sell some of their possessions. The early Church followed this teaching as seen below: Acts 2:44-45 GNT Acts 4:34-37 AMPC For instance, Barnabas didn't sell all his possessions. Rather, according to this Scripture above, he *"SOLD A FIELD WHICH BELONGED TO HIM"* (Acts 4:37, AMPC). However, Jesus told the rich ruler who trusted in his riches to sell off all his possessions and to give the money to the poor so that he could have treasures in heaven, and then to become His follower or disciple. Luke 18:22 KJV Luke 18:22 AMPC You see, that man's heart was on money. He trusted in and worshipped money. It was his god. It had chained his heart to this world. And his deliverance would only come by letting go of that money or wealth that had taken the place of God in his weak heart. He was probably a stingy, selfish or greedy person. He was busy laying up treasures on earth at the expense of his soul. Money had captured his poor heart. But, after Jesus had told that rich ruler to sell off all his possessions and give to the poor, he became very sorrowful because he was very rich and worshipped his riches instead of God. Luke 18:23 KJV You see, people who lay up treasures for themselves on earth and set their minds on earthly things become sorrowful when they need to convert those things to heavenly treasures because their minds are still set on earthly things unrepentantly. Let's see part of this particular story according to Mark below: Mark 10:21-27 AMPC In other words, Jesus was saying that this particular man not only possessed wealth, but also was possessed by wealth! It's good, safe and sinless to have money in a godly way, but it's bad, dangerous and sinful to let money have you! Friend, let's be extremely careful with money because in a sense, money is a "spirit." A money-minded person can never make heaven. But, a wealthy Christian who trusts in God, making his wealth in a godly way and submitting his wealth to God won't be hindered by his wealth from making heaven. 1 Timothy 6:10 BBE Money is not a root of all evil; but the love of money is a root of all evil according to this verse above. Personally, I have fought the love of money off my life and ministry at different points in time. And I can tell from experience that Deuteronomy 8 and 1 Timothy 6 are part of the Scriptures that can help us fight this deadly monster off our lives and ministries. Shockingly, sadly and regretfully, the love of money will chain some believers down at the rapture and hinder them from making it! Remember Lot's wife. Again, a fool lays up treasures on earth for himself, and he neither has a rich relationship and fellowship with God nor is he rich in good works. Luke 12:16-21 KJV *PAUL* 1 Timothy 6:17-19 NIV 1 Timothy 6:18-19 KJV In essence, Paul was saying that BEING RICH IN GOOD WORKS as well as giving WILLINGLY (from the heart, not reluctantly) and GENEROUSLY (big-heartedly, bountifully, open-handedly or charitably) will help us to lay up TREASURE for ourselves as a firm FOUNDATION for THE COMING AGE, so that we may take hold of ETERNAL LIFE. That was a message he gave Timothy to give the rich. But, it also pertains to the poor and the middle class (in between) who had to give at their own level because it's not the amount, but the measure that matters to God. Consider carefully Jesus' experience below: *41 And He sat down opposite the treasury and saw how the crowd was casting money into the treasury. MANY RICH [PEOPLE] WERE THROWING IN LARGE SUMS. 42 AND A WIDOW WHO WAS POVERTY-STRICKEN CAME AND PUT IN TWO COPPER MITES [THE SMALLEST OF COINS], WHICH TOGETHER MAKE HALF OF A CENT. 43 And He called His disciples [to Him] and said to them, TRULY AND SURELY I TELL YOU, THIS WIDOW, [SHE WHO IS] POVERTY-STRICKEN, HAS PUT IN MORE THAN ALL THOSE CONTRIBUTING TO THE TREASURY. 44 FOR THEY ALL THREW IN OUT OF THEIR ABUNDANCE; BUT SHE, OUT OF HER DEEP POVERTY, HAS PUT IN EVERYTHING THAT SHE HAD–[EVEN] ALL SHE HAD ON WHICH TO LIVE* (Mark 12:41-44 AMPC). So, we can conclude that giving generally, either tithes or offerings will help us to lay up treasures in heaven for ourselves against the time to come, laying hold on eternal life. *(B) HELPING OTHERS* Deuteronomy 10:18-19 KJV This Scripture above shows that God wants to help the fatherless, widows and strangers. And in the Scriptures below, we see clearly that tithes were to help the Levite, the fatherless, widows and strangers. Deuteronomy 14:28-29 KJV Deuteronomy 26:12-13 KJV In the Old Testament, the Levite constituted a tribe in Israel handling ministering in the tabernacle or temple. But, today, we have pastors handling that. He's assisted by some other ministers. Therefore, a wise pastor administers the tithes to help the fivefold ministers (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers) and non-fivefold ministers (intercessors, psalmists, drama ministers, and so on), strangers, the fatherless and the widows. (The head of a local Church is a pastor, not an apostle. An apostle is a travelling minister while a pastor is a residing or staying minister. In fact, an apostle has been described as a pastor of pastors. Though, an apostle can pastor temporarily when the Church is new or young, nevertheless, he needs to put a pastor in charge as soon as possible as the Church grows while he moves on to the next place of assignment. You may study my books: *"THE MINISTRY OF AN APOSTLE"* and *"THE MINISTRY OF A PASTOR"* along this line.) In fact, God wants us to entertain strangers. Hebrews 13:2 KJV He also wants us to look after orphans and widows. James 1:27 KJV This implies that we should help the needy or helpless. So, paying our tithes will help us to help others — the ministers, the fatherless, the widows and the strangers. *(C) HELPING YOURSELF* Malachi 3:10-12 KJV Very importantly, giving your tithes in the Scriptural way, will bring some wonderful benefits to you. Let's look at these benefits one after the other as well as *"TWELVE REASONS WHY THINGS ARE TIGHT FOR SOME BELIEVERS PAYING TITHES."*
