The corrupted pastor
by Chong Shipei

Rui Zhi's eyes rolled in joy as he counted the money in the tithe offerings. Wow, what a harvest this year-- more than one million dollars in tithes. It was more money than he had ever seen. Surely, Rui Zhi reasoned within himself, he could help himself to a portion of it. 10% would be just right, after all, he had worked hard for the Lord.

Leaving behind his lucrative job as a banker, Rui Zhi chose to struggle through poverty in service of the Lord. All of these happened when he first built the church. There were many down days, where it was impossible to make ends meet. Yet, he persevered through it. The church would not have the success it had today if not for him. The Lord must surely not mind him tasting a bit of the fruit of his labors. After all, he had a family to support.

Rui Zhi's face filled the newspapers in Singapore for corruption.

My Lord, my lord, why had you forsaken me? Rui Zhi thought to himself. I only took one hundred thousand for myself.

Rui Zhi felt a sense of bitterness towards the Lord as he was sentenced to three years in jail. Still, he humbled himself before the Lord and prayed for his mercy to be available. Rui Zhi rejoiced in his purposes in jail. There were prisoners, hungry for the gospels, and once again, Rui Zhi worked hard for the Lord.
