WHAT ARE WORKS OF THE FLESH?
by linzy bruno
"What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." (James 2:14-17)
However, those same good deeds are mere works of the flesh, if they are done with the intention of gaining good-standing with church members, trying to make an impression to hold a certain post or as an attempt to manipulate something or someone or for the simple and highly human, but ungodly purpose of feeling good about oneself. Those same "good deeds," are like a filthy rags before our Lord God:
Now that we have defined God's Righteousness in us, as opposed to self-righteousness; we can define works of the flesh as anything we do apart from God.
"Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21)
Verses on God's Righteousness..... "For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish." (Psalm 1:6)
Verses illustrating that legalism stems from self-righteousness, NOT the righteousness of GOD:
"But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind Have taken us away." (Isaiah 64:6) "For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." (Galatians 5:13) ***As previously mentioned, checking our motives is of vital importance and quite helpful in our assessment of ourselves. NOTE: Works of the flesh covers all things done out of fleshy desire. Moreover, when one tends to abide in self-righteousness, there is also the propensity for unfair and undue judgment of others.
"Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are adultery, fornication, uncleaness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, self ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."
