Beware Of The Evils Of The Tongue As In The Word Of God
by Ngozi Nwoke

How many times have you wished you didn't say what you said? The tongue can be unruly if not tamed. And it can say things that will destroy a person and his future. And it's such that some words once spoken can't be retrieved and the effect may never be corrected. So, in this post, the evils of the tongue will be given to broaden your mind to the negative potentials of the tongue.

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell - James 3:6 (NKJV).

His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue is trouble and iniquity - Psalms 10:7 (NKJV).

Introduction

The tongue is a fire, full of iniquity, and it has the capability to defile the whole body and set on fire the way of nature. And this is the state of many people, for they have allowed the tongue to yield to its negative side. Hence, the scriptures have in many places warned us by giving us the evils the tongue can manifest. This is for us to learn and take caution.

The Evils Of The Tongue

  • The tongue devises destruction.

It talks and devises how a person is to be destroyed, thereby communicating evil to another. And once carried out, if God doesn't intervene, destruction of the victim is imminent.

Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully - Psalms 52:2 (NKJV).

  • It practices deceit

With the tongue, many people deceive people, for they say the wrong things as the right things. By so doing they paint the wrong picture in the mind of the other person, causing him to accept false as the truth. This is what deceitful tongue does because it loves words that devour.

Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips - Romans 3:13 (NKJV).

You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue - Psalms 52:4 (NKJV).

  • The tongue flatters

It praises and compliments someone insincerely for its own selfish reasons. This makes the person do what he ordinarily will not do.

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is destruction; their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongue - Psalms 5:9 (NKJV).

  • It's full of cursing

The mouth also curses people made in the image of God. This is speaking evil of the works of God, and it's certainly not pleasant to Him.

With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God - James 3:9 (NKJV).

  • An instrument of oppression

The words of your mouth if not guarded will oppress your hearers. These words go to their hearts as arrows to wound them.

His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue is trouble and iniquity - Psalms 10:7 (NKJV).

  • An instrument of lies

The tongue speaks lies and aligns with the enemy, who is the father of all liars. And it hates those it crushes.

A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin - Proverbs 26:28 (NKJV).

Cure To The Evil Tongue

The major cure to this evil side of the tongue is to know God and align your heart and words to His words. This is because from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. As such, what you put in your heart is what you will say. So, when you feed on God's word that will be what you will say.

Conclusion

The evils of the tongue are real, and they harm your hearers and will return to set on fire the course of your own life. Therefore, it's important that you beware of these evils, align with God's word and ensure you don't yield to the pressures of the tongue.
