The Little Lamb and the Special Snowflake
by Tonja Taylor Once there was a little lamb named Lacy who loved snow.1 She was almost grown, and it had been a long time since she had seen any snow, so she wanted some. She loved to play in it. She loved to make snow people—and snow lambs. She loved to watch it fall, lovely and soft, as it covered the earth and made it seem white and pure, and holy. To Lacy, there was something wonderful and holy about snow. She knew it was frozen water, but it made everything look new again, like when the LORD God first created the earth; beautiful and clean. One very special night, she felt a great excitement. She went over to talk to some of the younger lambs. In the moonlight, they looked like puffs of snow. They were so cute, and always sweet, and often awake past bedtime. Their shepherds2 were on guard, watching by firelight, and all was peaceful. There were no stars showing, only clouds, but the moon was full, and illuminated the sky. Lacy said, “Thank You, dear Lord, for my sweet friends.” Just then, it started to snow! Lacy was overjoyed, and laughed out loud running around, trying to catch the lovely flakes. The lambs had never seen snow, and were full of questions. She told them it was good, and soon they were running and frolicking with her. The shepherds looked confused and concerned, then they smiled and tried to catch the flakes in their hands. Lacy did too. Snow, beautiful snow! She hoped it lasted long enough to cover the earth in a pure blanket of white. She hoped the sun would come out tomorrow, and make it sparkle and shine. Suddenly, a huge shining angel appeared! He spoke to the shepherds and said, “Fear not: For behold I bring you good tidings of great joy to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the LORD. And this shall be a sign to you; you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” Then the sky was full of light! There was a whole host of Heavenly angels praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”3 So that’s what all the excitement was about, and no wonder! Lacy’s mother had told her about Jesus, the Lamb of God, Who had been born to save all people from their sins. How amazing that God would send His perfect Son to come live as a human on the earth, to teach them how much God loves them, then to die for them so they didn’t have to. That was even more amazing and wonderful and holy than snow! And now, Jesus the Lamb of God was here! The angels disappeared, and in their place in the East was the most beautiful and brilliant star that Lacy had ever seen. Lacy, the lambs, the older sheep, and the shepherds all stood and gazed in wonder at the sight. The snow continued to fall, and as the star shone upon it, the snow glistened. It was the most beautiful Lacy had seen; a very special snow! The LORD had heard Lacy’s unspoken prayer—as He heard all prayers that were real. "We must follow the star, and see the Christ Child,” Lacy heard the youngest shepherd say.4 “We must see the Messiah!” “Yes, take the best lambs from the flock as an offering,” said the older. “I will watch the flock while you go. The Messiah has come!” “Hallelujah! Jesus is born! Jesus is born!” said Lacy, “The Savior is born!” and the other sheep and lambs rejoiced with her, which sounded like “Baa-baa!” to the shepherds. “Wow, we get to go see Jesus!” said one the little lamb. “What will you take the Lamb of God as an offering, Lacy?” “Oh, an offering!” What would she take as an offering to the LORD Jesus? She thought for a minute. “I know,” she said, “I will take Him a very special snowflake, for this is a very special snow. Each snowflake is special, just like each person He made. He is sure to like my offering. I bet the other lambs won’t think of that, and I bet no human will, either.” She noticed one coming down that seemed to shine brighter, and she caught it on her little black nose. She thought it the most splendid design. “There! You are to be my special snowflake to the LORD!” she told it. She showed it to the lambs. They all agreed that surely the LORD Jesus would like it. The younger shepherd walked over and chose three little lambs. “Time to go! We get to see King Jesus!” The shepherd couldn’t see her, but Lacy went with them, eager to see the Savior. They were all very happy, Lacy, and the shepherd and the lambs. They sang songs of thanks to God as they went. Lacy peeked again at her special snowflake. Other snowflakes had fallen over it, but she decided that would keep it from falling off. She couldn’t wait to give it to Jesus. He would know she was special because of her special gift, she told herself. As they reached Bethlehem, the snow stopped, and the sky was full of the light of the star. To Lacy’s surprise, it did not lead them to a beautiful palace or a huge fancy house, but to a barn with many animals. Baby Jesus was lying in a boxlike thing—a manger, just like the angel said. Here was the King of Glory that the Scriptures and people and angels had talked about for a long, long time, born as the poorest of humans. Lacy didn’t understand it, but that was okay. She had often heard the shepherds talk about Him and pray to Him, but no one knew everything about the LORD. He was all-powerful, mysterious, and magnificent. And He was Love5. Lacy knew enough to know that Jesus was Love come to earth. No one spoke; all the animals were quiet and still. The young shepherd knelt just inside the door, and clutched a lamb to his heart. Lacy knew his offering to the LORD was the finest and whitest, the most perfect of the flock. For a moment, Lacy wished she was that lamb. She looked down at the wool on her side. Some of it was dusty cream, not pure white like the other lamb’s. She felt sad. But then, she just decided to be happy she got to see Jesus, and give Him her special gift. There were kings6 kneeling, dressed in the finest robes and sparkling jewels. They had brought Jesus gifts of gold, and frankincense and myrrh, costly spices. The very best.7 The kings bowed to King Jesus, then moved to the side. Joseph nodded at the young shepherd, who presented his most perfect lamb to them. Lacy was in awe as she followed her shepherd and came close to the Child. She gazed at the face of the baby king, the most beautiful she had ever seen. There was a glow on His mother Mary’s face, but the glow of Jesus was so much brighter—as bright as the star! Joseph stood beside them, gazing at the Miracle of God. Still, she thought, the kings in all their wealth could not compare to this tiny Child, dressed in rags but clothed in mercy and grace. All brought gifts to Him. And to all, He was the Gift. Her heart swelled with love and joy and thankfulness. “Immanuel,” she whispered, “God with us!”8 Instantly, the LORD of Heaven looked at her, and His eyes touched her very heart. She smiled and said, “Praise You, my LORD! I brought You an offering, a very special snowflake. There is not another like it!” She held out her nose to Him—but as she looked down at it, she saw that all the snowflakes were gone! "Oh no, Jesus, my snowflake is gone! My offering is gone! I’m sorry, LORD. I have nothing to give You!” she baaahed to Him. Lacy was shocked and sad. She thought she had the perfect gift, and now it was gone. What would she give the Savior? At that moment, the angel Gabriel9 appeared to her! He had never spoken to her before. “Little lamb,” said Gabriel, in a voice gentle but strong, “Lacy!” he said. “You know we can give the Holy One nothing—except the total devotion of ourselves. We can only give him ourselves, and that is what He wants. He is worthy!” Then he disappeared. No one else acted like they saw the massive angel. Lacy suddenly understood. There was nothing she could give the LORD, except herself. Because He had created her, she was already special to Him. To give herself to the LORD meant to do what His Word said, to praise Him, and to use her gifts to bring Him glory. She knew now that the LORD cared; He cared enough to send Gabriel the messenger archangel to speak to her! She was filled with joy and wanted to praise Him. So she did. The little lamb sang with all her heart. It still sounded like “Baah-baaaaaaah!” to the shepherds and other animals. But the LORD Jesus smiled, and that smile was like the sun breaking over the earth, transforming darkness into light. Even though they couldn’t understand Lacy’s words, the little lamb’s worship touched their hearts, and the people had tears in their eyes. The shepherds and kings and the animals heard a new heavenly voice that night, and gave praise to the King of all10. The End
NOTES 1The Bible speaks of snow over 20 times. Two such verses are: “Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18 NIV As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10, 11 NIV 2The birth of Christ was not in December, but closer to Spring, and snow would be entirely possible — especially considering the “miracles” of snow falling in our time “out of season” in places such as Florida and Hawaii. Shepherds did not keep their flocks in the open until after Passover. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:8-11, NIV Also, according to Bible teacher Dr. Kenneth Copeland, “The lambs out in the field were Covenant lambs, special-bred for the Temple.” 3Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13, 14 NIV 4When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:15-20, NIV 5And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” I John 4:16 NIV 6After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” - Matthew 2:1, 2 NIV 7And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11 8Jesus the LORD is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. “Omniscient” is the word for all-knowing, and “Omnipotent” is the word for all-powerful. “Omnipresent” means the LORD through the Holy Spirit is everywhere at once. “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” Revelation 19:6 KJV 9Gabriel is the angel who gave the most important messages in the Bible, first to Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin: And the angel replied to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the [very] presence of God, and I have been sent to talk to you and to bring you this good news.” Luke 1:19 Then Gabriel went to the mother of Jesus: “Now in the sixth month [after that], the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth to a girl never having been married and a virgin engaged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.” Luke 1:26, 27 10Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” Psalm 98
