One of the most inspiring and comforting verses in the Bible is Romans 8:28; it reads, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

            Some may wonder if it’s really possible for anything good to come from an accident, illness, misfortune, or other negative events in our lives. But, consider this: a pharmacist will often mix something which is harmful by itself with another ingredient, and the result is something which actually fights infection, safeguards the body from illness or treats a specific condition. The concept of something bad being used to bring about something good is not an unusual one. But, why is the particular truth of Romans 8:28 such a comfort?

            First of all, it is a statement of confidence. The author says that “we know” that it is true. The original Greek word for “know” (eido), doesn’t simply mean to be aware of, but to “see” and “behold”. In other words, it’s not just something they believe to be true, but something which they have experienced.

            Secondly, it is a comprehensive statement, asserting that God can use “all things” in our lives to bring about good results for us. Within the framework of His plan for your life, God wishes to use every “ingredient” to promote your spiritual health, and provide you with peace, joy and assurance. Psalm 119:71 says, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.” In other words, the Psalmist learned more about God through his suffering, by investigating God’s word.

            We must realize, however, that Romans 8:28 is also a conditional statement. It clearly tells us that this formula is “for those who love him”. That means it is for those who have committed their lives to him, through Jesus Christ.

            God’s desire is that EVERYONE would realize their best life through him (2 Peter 3:9). However, he won’t force anyone to do so, and only guarantees such blessings to those who follow him. Is Romans 8:28 true for you?
