Teachers from a regional school system gathered for a late spring event to celebrate the end of their educational year and the beginning of their summer vacation.

All instructors who attended the event wanted to share some words of wisdom about their learning experiences from the year. One by one, they took the podium and Mr. Moderator handed him or her the microphone.

Spelling Teacher was chosen to be the first speaker. “Mr. Moderator, it is my pleasure to be here today and share my thoughts on the school year,” Mrs. Spelling Teacher said. “Correct spelling is one of the most important aspects of continued learning. One letter too few or too many in a word can change the word’s total meaning or possibly turn it into a non-word. And if it’s not a word, then it has no meaning!”

“Or possibly it becomes a word in a different language,” said Mr. Moderator.

“Exactly,” Mrs. Spelling Teacher responded.

Math Teacher walked across the stage and accepted the microphone from Mr. Moderator. “Three, two one, go!” grinned Mr. Moderator, as he handed the mic to Math Teacher.

“Math was my favorite subject,” said Mr. Moderator.

“I was thinking that might be the case,” smiled Math Teacher.

“I not only tell my students the importance of getting the correct answer to a problem, but I also explain the necessity of showing how he or she arrived at their answer,” he continued. “This approach works not only on math problems, but in all of life’s situations.”

English Teacher told the gathering, “The subject of English is one that is used each day in every aspect of life. It is important to be able to convey your message to the people with whom you are communicating,” she said. “This concept is so important that I tell all students about the importance of talking to themselves. Just a brief daily conversation with ourselves can make a world of difference in our ability to communicate with others.”

History Teacher told the other teachers that his message was the most important one of the day. “I try to learn at least one lesson from my own past or from someone else’s past on a daily basis,” he stated.

“But why do you think your message is the most important one we’re hearing here today?” asked Mr. Moderator.

“Simple,” smiled History Teacher. “I’ve always heard, and I’ve always taught that if we don’t learn the lessons history is trying to teach us, we will be doomed to repeat those lessons as we learn them the hard way – from personal experience!”
