A Christian is Dead to the Law, Freed from the Law and Dead to Sin
by Michael Edwards Christianity is all about believing God. It is not about who can keep the laws better or look the best on the outside. The Bible clearly teaches that we have died to the law, been freed from the law, and died to sin. Sin can no longer condemn or kill us. Do you have the faith it takes to believe what the Bible teaches? The law has no power over a dead man. 1Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.Rom 7:1-6 ESV 1) Sin’s power to condemn comes from the law. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 1 Cor 15:56 ESV 2)Jesus died to the law once and thus took sin’s power away for all of us. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. Rom 6:10 ESV 3) Jesus disarmed Satan at the cross by canceling the debt we had due to the law, setting aside the law. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Col 2:13-15 ESV 4) By faith we are to see ourselves crucified in Christ, dead, dead to the law, dead to sin. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 2 Cor 5:14 ESV Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. Rom 7:4 ESV For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. Gal 2:19 ESV having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. Col 2:12 ESV 5) Dead men are released from the law’s power to condemn and kill. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. Rom 7:6 ESV The Greek word for released in Rom 7:6 is Katargeó. Strongs number 2673, it is defined as to render inoperative, abolish. 6) Apart from the law sin has no power to condemn. We are freed from the law and dead to sin like the woman in Romans 7:3. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. Rom 7:3 ESV For apart from the law, sin lies dead. Rom 7:8 b So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Rom 6:11 ESV 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Rom 6 5:11 ESV What about our future sins? Now that we agree with God and see our flesh as crucified, as dead, does the law have any hold on you the rest of your life? No. Can the law convict and condemn you for your failures anytime in your future? No. Dead men are dead; they are freed permanently from the law. God places us under grace and is not imputing or counting our sins. “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more” Heb 10:17 ESV. “…that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” 2 Cor 5:19 ESV Is it okay to sin then? I believe that Christians are looking for a way out of sin and not a way into sin. If you are looking for a loophole to sin, then you probably are not saved. If we are living under grace, sin has no dominion over us. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Rom 6:14 ESV If you want to sin, you are still living under the law where sin does have dominion. The only way to be free from the curse of the law is to trust in Christ as your savior. Read Romans 7 and 8. 1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Rom 6:1-4 ESV Read more article about the New Covenant. This is the Covenant Jesus died to bring us. And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Luke 22:20 ESV
