Men Of Honest Report
by Greg Robbins

Acts 6:1-4 “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.”

Bible standards are very high. Just to serve tables these men had to be of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost, and wisdom. This wasn’t a teaching or preaching position. This was to simply  distribute food and necessary items to widows, and other people in the congregation. This was a helps ministry. Whenever we look at the Bible the standard will be raised high and quality will be demanded.

When God took up offerings to build the tabernacle and later on, the temple, he demanded the very best materials, and the most talented craftsmen and workers. When animal sacrifices were made, God did not receive defective animals with blemishes, spots, or defects. The men from the Levites who served the ark of the covenant could not have any skin blemish, birth defects, missing body parts, damaged body parts, or be dwarfs. In all things pertaining to the things of God, he demands excellence and perfection.

I observe today that volunteers in churches and ministry events are all accepted without knowing anything about these people at all. Usually there is no background check or references required. They are just looking for bodies to fill the positions and to do the work. There are exceptions to this, I readily agree, but in the majority of the cases it is as I described. Even staff positions are often filled by people who do not meet the high standards presented in the Bible.

Anytime that we leave the Biblical example and instructions, we get into trouble. The modern church has almost completely deserted and rejected the life example, teachings, and commands of Jesus Christ. For this reason sin is rampant in the churches, and even those who are in ministry regularly fall. It is a sad state of affairs. The church today at best can be described as lukewarm, and this is unacceptable with God.

It is time that we return to the literal interpretation of the Bible, whenever it is possible. It is time to return to the life example of Jesus, his teaching, and his commands. Jesus came to establish his church and to give us the commands that govern it. By leaving the pages of the Bible, we now have thousands of denominations, sects, and splinter groups that make up what we call Christianity. The reason for this is that they are all established upon the doctrine and the commands of men. If they were all faithfully following Jesus, then they would all be teaching and practising the same thing. But that is not what is happening.

If we are to heal the church of these terminal diseases before it’s too late, then we need to get started right away. The clock is ticking and the time is running out.
