"Instead Of"
by Linda Jackson

I know I'm a daughter of the heavenly King.
You see me, my King through a shimmering veil of blood, the blood of Your Son, and You see beauty. The thought of being seen all glorious within is very hard to believe. The garment I wear, interwoven with gold, glistening in the light of Your smile.

I must be mindful as I walk here on earth for pride can work causing a love for more and more outward beauty. The inward beauty of You must not turn to an outward pride of excess. Lord I know how disappointed You are if my head is held high. If my eyes become seductive and wander, if the tinkling of my shoes is for attention as I walk. I must remember how You reached down and tore the beauty off of Your pridful daughters.
You removed...............
Their
Anklets, headbands and crescent moons
Dangling earrings, bracelets and perfumes
Their
Veils, sashes, undergarments, turban, money
purses, cloaks
Hand mirrors, amulets, finger, nose rings
and festal robes

You saw pride in their hearts as they strutted for attention, just as You have see it in mine.
I've paraded many of these things in the past, some I have rejected some I still hold on to. Help me to let go of any pride they may cause. I do have a desire to please my husband but I must not let it cross the line that would displease You. Pride can slip in fast and leave very slowly. Instead of a prideful look in my mirror, may I reflect the daughter You want me to be. For in Your word You have shown me Your discipline in the practicing display of self..................
Instead of
Perfumed oil, so smooth and sweet
I'll become putrid from my head to my feet
Instead of
My jeweled belt that fits just right
A ragged rope, frayed, knotted to tight
Instead of
My long hair, shining like silky strands
I'll have bald spots with hair in my fisted hand
Instead of
Soft comfortable clothing I choose to wear
Rough fabric on my skin that rubs and tears
Instead of
Beauty that I show in vain
Only a brand across my face will remain
