Mind Your Thoughts
by Olawale Ogunsola A man's thoughts determine his destiny: who he is and who he will be. The Scripture says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is." The quality of his thought determines that of his life. A man's heart is the workshop of his life. What you will become directly and largely comes from your heart. Out of the heart comes issues of life. Your thoughts influence your actions. Meaning, your action largely is a product of your thoughts. Expressed or not, your thoughts dictate what happen to you. Do you ask "How far is this true?" There was a severe famine invited by words of Prophet Elijah in his days. After his prophetic declarations closed windows of heaven that it did not rain, he was instructed to live near a river where ravens fed him for some time until the river dried. Next, he was instructed to go to the city of Zarephat to live with a widow who had been commanded by God to feed him. However, the widow was poor and was about to prepare her last meal, eat it with her lone son to await death. At this juncture, she met the prophet of God who decreed abundance into her life which came to pass because a little meal to feed only two persons became what the widow, her son and Prophet Elijah ate for years. Do you know one striking fact about this woman? With abundance provisions, her heart was not right within her towards the Prophet of God. How do I know? She said so at a crucial time. How? The only son of that widow became ill until he breathed his last. The woman lamented! She also accused the man of God of bringing his past wrongdoings to remembrance before God. She initially concealed evil contents of her heart. To God always be the glory; Prophet Elijah prayed and the son of the wonan was raised from the dead. He then handed him over to his mother. At this point, without any debate, she voluntarily emptied her thoughts towards the Prophet of God. Her unbelieving thoughts revealed, "Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth." 1 Kings 17:24 (King James Version). Before then, she never thought Prophet Elijah was a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in his mouth was the truth. She was not convinced with "The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth." 1 Kings 17: 14.19. What was the contents of the bin of flour and the jar of oil? The woman had revealed, "As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." verse 12. Yet, the Lord wanted to convince her that He was the Lord God of Elijah and the word of the Lord in his mouth was the truth, so, her son died and was brought back to life. God is not wicked! The meeting of the two was the Lord's doing to preserve lives in draught. What are the contents of your heart? Do you harbour an evil heart of unbelief in a man of God or in your Maker Himself or in His Words? The Lord can take any step to convince you. He can use any means to do so. It will therefore be to your advantage to have a simple faith in God and His Word as well as His Ministers who can be known by their fruits and not by any other means like nunber of cars, houses, clothes, and so on. Henceforth, mind your thoughts, control what you allow to pass through or dwell in your heart. By so doing, you will control the quality of what you will expect from God and man.
