Obvious Questions Answered for 1 John 5
by Bobby Bruno

Who: Everyone who believes in the name of Jesus.

What: John wants everyone to know that those who believe have eternal life. As children of God, we should no longer sin, and should pray for our sinful brothers and sisters in Christ to turn away from their sin. We, being born of God, should no longer sin. The testimony of the Trinity is greater than any man's testimony.

When: This chapter does not designate when it was being written.

Where: The chapter does not designate where John wrote the letter.

How: This letter was written with joy, but with compassion that everyone reading it really knows that God loves them. It is written as instruction, not as a reprimand, with love for his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why: The church John writes to must have been told by others that they do not have eternal life. John wants to reassure them that, because of the water and the blood of Christ, and because of their belief in the Son of God, that they do, in fact, have eternal life, no matter what others say. John must tell them so that they will not fall back into sin. Not sinning anymore is proof that they are children of God.
