A NIGHT OF NIGHTMARE
by Samuel Akinola I waddled through a swamp, ignoring cries of thousands of organism shrilling in it, pointing flashlight ahead of me. Night has come, night in the forest made me creepy in my first two days in the Amazon. But now after a week I believed I fear nothing. I stopped for a moment, brought out a map to know where I am. From the line of longitude I knew I am deep in the forest, faraway from our camp. Yes, this is what I want, to find my own path and make my own discoveries. From my backpack I brought out bottled water, took few sips and returned it back; before continuing my exploration. It has been two days since I left my group of geologists to make my own discovery, and I can say I have been very successful in the discoveries. I trekked five miles more, making note of everything that fascinate me, before I decided to rest for the night under a tree. I settled down to sleep in my camp bag, after making sure the fire I made kept burning to keep away wild animal. I must have fallen asleep right away, until low growling woke me up. Alas, what firstly caught my attention is a pair of devilish eyes glaring at me in the dark thickset. Involuntary reflex forced me to my feet immediately; there was no time to reach for my backpack for my pistol before the devil in the dark pounced out in one furious leap. Alas, to my greatest horror it was an enormous she-wolf, its fangs glinting like silver, growling and howling horribly. Reflex took hold of me; I sprung forward like a cat chase by the devil and took to my heels. The beast too took after me, its paws pounding the earth, knocking shrubs and trees apart in the wild chase. Screaming will do me no good, for I am about thirty miles away from our camp for any help to come, so I am completely at the mercy of the chasing night-devil. Surely I did not dream to end up in the belly of any beast, but right now I know I will soon end up as dinner for this chasing beast. I ran until I came to a dead-end, seeing no other way to escape I stood still like a man to face death. The beast too slowed down and began to circle me, perhaps savouring the meal to come; its howling and growling almost deaf my ears, howling long and loud. It was like a horrible nightmare, the beast too wild and enormous for a man like me to fight and kill. Though initially I could not believe my eyes, the beast slowly began to transform. With mouth agape I beheld the wild she-wolf transformed into the most beautiful female I have ever set my eyes upon. Her skin fair and flawless, her piercing golden eyes piercing into my soul, her set of white teeth glinting like the fangs I once saw. She stood before me in her complete glory before slumping on a broken tree trunk, great sadness on her beautiful face. My heart smote me with affection; I recalled I have seen her before on the first day we arrive, by the river basin. I pulled out my jacket, slowly sidled to her and covered her against the chilling wind and sat next to her. She looked into my affectionate face with tearful eyes and burst into tears. I took her into my comforting arms, soothing her in mild affection, her head braced on my manly chest. "Do... do not despise me Brian, me and my curse." She whispered softly amid tears. Brian she called me, how the hell did she knew my name! "I will could not despise you lady, let your curse be mine and my heart yours." She smiles affectionate into my face, beads of tear dripping down her lovely eyes, "I am Annabel, please help me if you can." Her passionate tone smote my heart with more affection, I cuddled her to me, whipping away her tears, "I swear to heaven I will do whatever I could to help, O Annabel, my she-wolf. If medicine could not cure the curse, I confidently knew Christ would, no power like Jesus." I smiled mildly; she cuddled around me too, breathing slowly in relief.
