Who is Babylon the Great in Revelation?
by Mark Wells

The majority of Christians believe that Babylon the Great in Revelation 17 and 18 is either a city like New York, or Islam, or some other false religion. But there is clear evidence to prove that Babylon is none of the above.

In Revelation 17, Babylon is said to be guilty of committing "fornication", which means she has committed adultery against God. Now if you read Ezekiel 16:26-32, you will see that God is telling Israel, His people that they are guilty of committing fornication and have become a "whore" by mixing with other nations and practicing their Pagan customs and going after other "gods".

Now if you read this in the context of Babylon the Great committing adultery against God, then you begin to see that Babylon must be a professing Christian Church.

Let's look at it this way. A wife can commit adultery against her husband if she has a relationship with another man. But can any other woman commit adultery against this husband? No, because she wouldn't be "married" to him. In the same way, there is only one group of people who can commit adultery against God. Christians!

Christians are the only people who can commit adultery against God because they are the only one's who are "married" to Christ Jesus. Jesus in the Bible is regarded as the Bridegroom and Christians are the bride. Islam or any other false religion cannot commit adultery against God because they do not accept Christ as their personal Saviour and therefore they are not "married" to God. And if you are not married to someone, then you cannot be guilty of committing adultery against them.

So Babylon the Great HAS to be a professing Christian church who has turned away from the truth of God's Word and has mixed it's faith with Pagan traditions.

And from the rest of the description of Babylon you will be able to see exaclty who it is. She is arrayed in "Purple and Scarlet". She is "decked with Gold and precious stones", meaning she is a wealthy church with great "wonderful" church buildings. She mingles with the kings of the earth. And she is guilty of persecuting the saints of God.

There is only one church, based in Rome, that matches the description of Babylon the Great.
