An Open Letter to My Mother
by Michael Blunk Th.D. Mother's Day, 2011 Dear Mom, There is no one in the world like you. You are gracious in your speech, in your conduct, and in your appearance. I have often thought you are a bit too good for this world. Rather than professing your Christian faith in word only, you have lived a life that has brought honor to the Lord Jesus Christ. No one hearing your words or observing your conduct would say, "And she dares to call herself a Christian?" Your faith is real. Genuine. Your life has truly reflected your dedication to Jesus Christ. In a world that has become increasingly coarse and crude and prone to gratuitous vulgarity, the quiet dignity and polished refinement that hallmarks your life is wonderfully refreshing. You have not allowed the decline in civility to tarnish your character. For this, I am grateful. John mentioned something about you a number of years ago that I have long considered: he said you never offered your opinion unless you were asked. This is one of the reasons I find talking to you so easy. When I studied counseling in seminary, one of the professors was quick in saying, "Don't tell other people what they should do!" Counseling is not one person rearranging another person's life--a good counselor is a careful listener, supportive, wise, and issues advice sparingly. Again, this is one of the reasons I enjoy talking with you. You might be pleased in knowing this is how I handle clients who come to me with problems. I know with certainty that my entry into full time ministry points back to your determination that I should know the Gospel as a child. And though I was slow in answering the call, I am certain it was your prayers in my behalf that made a difference. I am where I want to be and need to be--and much of this I owe to you. Obviously, I have many reasons for loving you. And I certainly do love you. If something ever happened to you, only my hope of being reunited with you in Heaven would keep me from despair.
