To my son
by Matthew Thomason My sweet, sweet, son How you have made me the most blessed among women I have gathered up all the things said by men and angels And have treasured them in my heart I remember when the angel came to me and told me of your birth How you would be the one to save us all Oh how my heart rejoiced! And now I have seen with my eyes those words coming true Your father loves you as dearly as I He was shocked to find that I was with child But the angel came to him and assured him as he did me That you were the one, the king of peace, who would rule the world. I watched you grow from a beautiful infant in love with everyone To a robust child knocking about the house with a lust for life To a man, a true poet king, capable of the most profound wisdom And astonishing intelligence. Wherever you go, my son, know that I love you. Know that your earthly father and I are the proudest of parents That our lines should give birth to you, the culmination of our dreams, The fulfillment of our purpose, the heritage of our forefathers Know that the world will come to love you as we love you My sweet, sweet prince, My infant son, my King, My William.
