One Life At a Time
by Bob Valleau I admit it. Sometimes I scour the obituary section of my local paper. As we age and confront our own mortality, I think a lot of us become curious about how others have lived their lives. Once, a man's obituary caught my eye because it was so long. I figured this guy must have done some important stuff while he was alive. And I wasn't disappointed to find out exactly what he did -- which is a topic dear to my heart. The deceased man lived in a rural town near where I live. He retired from a technology career, and then he became an endearing grandfather to his four grandchildren. He loved to tell them stories. In fact, he wrote a book for them titled, "Grandfather, Tell Me a Story." In addition to being a loving grandfather, he was an active volunteer for various community organizations. One of the organizations that he participated in was a pro-literacy organization. Most of his volunteer work through this organization was reading to children at his local library. I'm sure he made the stories exciting to capture his young audiences' interest and imagination. Reading and writing are important skills to have in today's world. Yet, I find it hard to believe that there are still some who cannot do either or have difficulty doing so. I applaud this man for his efforts. He is an example of how each of us can make a difference in other people's lives -- one life, or generation, at a time. Bob Valleau has over 30 years of writing experience for the Christian market.
