GOD...The Cure for Singleness
by Cheryl Smith

"The one I was praying for.
The one He delayed me for.
The one He kept for me, until it was time."
The One He Kept For Me Maurette Brown Clark

Lord I finally get itSingleness is not a disease and if it was there is a cure, Faith and Patience.

Everyday we get a healthy dose of the media in its many forms telling us that we are incomplete without a mate. And then we try to figure out why people go through extremes to find a mate. Not only that, but also society, sitting on our heads like a giant elephant, pressures us to strive for any relationship we can get. I have friends who are so afraid of singleness that they have resigned themselves to share their mates or significant other with other Joes or Jennys.

All that society dictated formed an imprint on my mind and for years I held my own pity one-person tea party wondering what was wrong with me and why I never found my soulmate. I am not bad looking, I am successful and Lord knows I have been good and prayed the same prayer and fasted over and overLORD PLEASE SEND ME A MATE, A HUSBAND I AM GETTING OLD! You know Matthew 7:7Ask, Seek and Knock. Yet, still no answer from God. Well not the one that I wanted to hear anyway. Who has time to wait? Time waits on no man.

There were times when I avoided outings because I got tired of always being the third or fifth or seventh or even the ninth wheel. Voyeurism is not my cup of tea and people making kissy faces or having the dreaded "I love you more" conversation does not help my ego. Every love song took me to dreamland, or Lifetime TV became a staple on my favorite channel button on the remote. In the end there was just emptiness and a darkness that threatened to suck all my energy and zest. I was desperate for some form of hope or for someone to show up and return the joy to my tea party. Sure enough God showed up.

On a recent vacation, when I was heading towards a low point, He ministered to my soul through the most beautiful song"The One He Kept For Me" by Maurette Brown Clark. He finally got through. I finally heard what He wanted me to knowHE IS IN CONTROL. I just needed to be patient and exercise a little faith. In that AHA! moment two bible verses stuck in my mindRomans 28:8 (NIV) "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" and Phillipians 4:6 (NIV) "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." These were verses I repeated over and over, but in that instant I finally understood the termLET GO and LET GOD.

Singles, take it from me it is time to tune out the world and turn up the volume on the WGOD station to get your praise on and return joy to your life. I tried it and sure enough it worked. First things first, a mate cannot complete me only God can. No mate can make me happy only God can. It is a constant struggle everyday but I have every confidence that God will do right by me. And even though I am still single, if it is His will then I too will be thanking Him on my wedding day "for the one He kept for me until it was time". God works at His own pace and in His own time. He is never late or early. He is always on time. He Himself says in Isaiah 55: 8 that "my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my way."

The only thing I try to be mindful of is that even though I am hopeful for a mate, he may not come in the package that I envision. You know the world will seep in every now and again. I would be crazy to say that I do not want a successful and handsome Christian husband. My mother never raised a fool. However, I continue to seek God's wisdom to discern His leading as to the one He kept for me or kept me for.
