WHEN SECULAR ENTERTAINERS DIE
by Yolanda Ro

The world mourns the lost of legendary musical performer Michael Jackson, and Actress Farrah Fawcett.

On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson was found unresponsive in his home. The unofficial cause of death at this time is listed as cardiac arrest. Jackson's career spanned some 45 years. His album Thriller became-and currently remains-the best selling album of all time.

Michael Jackson's earlier life was plagued by verbal, emotional, and physical abuse at the hands of his father. Jackson's latter years were spent in several court cases fighting allegations of child molestation, of which he was acquitted.

Farrah Fawcett, who also died June 25, 2009, will likely be remembered as the blonde beauty from the hit 70s television series Charlie's Angels. She spent much of her later career attempting to rise above the "wild partying bleached blonde" image who posed nude in playboy during the 70s. It wasn't however, until her public battle with cancer and her steadfast hope in God, as reported by ABC News, that many begin to see another side to the actress.

Both Fawcett and Jackson made mistakes and earned bad publicity in some way or another. However, it is worth noting that both made attempts to reach out to others during their lives:

Fawcett went public with her very personal battle against anal cancer. It brought much attention to the disease and the possible prevention of it.

Few knew that Jackson was listed in the 2000 book of Guinness World Records for his support of 39 charities. At the time he was helping more charities than any other entertainer or personality.

So when secular entertainers die how should we as Christians view it? As one publicist wrote, "their deaths deserve respect." But even more profoundly stated, in 1 Corinthians 10:12, "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." translation...but for the grace of God, there go I! No, we should NOT celebrate, financially support, or condone worldly behavior. But we should mourn the lost of life and the lost of the potential impact that these persons could have made for the kingdom of God.
